What Do You Know About Timing Belts?
September 30, 2014

Of course brakes are incredibly important to the safety of driving a vehicle. Most people know that if they hear a squeak when applying the brakes it may mean the brake pads needs to be replaced. However, there are other parts the the braking system that need inspection beyond just the pads, and there are other signs that you should get your car checked at an auto repair facility that handles brake inspection.

Sings of You Need Brake Inspection and Repair – Federal Way

  1. Strange noises – As stated above, there is a squeaky, screeching sound that starts when brake pads are getting low. A small metal shim placed at the end of the pad is meant to create that sound as a warning. However, if pads have not been replaced in time—and the pad has been worn all the way down—then the noise becomes a much more noticeable growling, grinding noise. This means the pad is gone and the calipers are grinding against the brake discs. If not taken in for new pads immediately the calipers will warp and the cost of correcting the damage increases.
  2. More pressure, less response – If you notice it takes more pressure to get the same braking effect or if the pedal moves to the floor too easily, these are signs of a leak in brake fluid. If there is a leak, the fluid should be visible on the ground where the vehicle has been parked. Look for fluid that is similar to motor oil but slightly thinner.
  3. Vibrations – If you notice a shimmying vibration in the car, especially in the brake pedal, when you apply the brakes that may be a sign that the rotors are warped. This damage generally occurs when the brakes are held down for too long, such as when you do a lot of downhill driving.
  4. Pulling to one side – If your car pulls to one side when you brake that can be a sign that the brakes are not properly adjusted. If could also be a symptom of leaking brake fluid.
  5. Brake Warning Light – Of course the brake light being on is a definite sign of trouble. Try to get to an auto repair mechanic immediately. The sooner the diagnostics can be checked the better for an accurate, full-scale reading. Of course, it is also important as it ensures the safety of the driver and passengers.

Brakes are not something to put off getting checked. Taking your car in for regular inspection and auto maintenance is the best way to ensure your braking system stays in good working order. In the meantime, if you notice any of the signs listed above, get the car in for a brake inspection right away.
